A Survey for Improvement of Psychiatric Nursig (I)


Abstract
A Survey on the status of 24 psychiatric units at general hospitals & 3 nat. psychiatric hospital units & the activities of the nurses of them was carried out from Sept. 29, to Oct. 31, 1975. The results of the Survey were Summerized as follows:
1. There were 4 open units (14.8%). 20 closed units (74.1%) & 3 mixed type of units (11.1%). 2. 33.3% of the total psychiatric units always held 11-20 inpatients & 26% of them held 21^30 inpatients. About 7 inpatients were assigned to a psychiatric nurse.
3. Special allowance for psychiatric nurse was paid by 7.4% of the total psychiatric units.
4. 66.6% of the total psychiatric units had inservice program for their psychiatric nurses & 33.4% of them had inservice program for attendants.
5. All of the psychiatric units had recreational therapy & 21 psychiatric units had occupational therapy. Only a few of psychiatric units had Industrial & Educational therapy.
6. Ward conferences which most of psychiatric units had for improvement of communication between patient & warel personal & understanding each other, were pt. -ward personnel meeting, nurse -pt. meeting, ward personnel meeting & ward nurses meeting.
7. Among the above meetings, most frequent meeting is ward personnel meeting (66.7%) & ward nurses meeting (66.7%).
8. 63.3% of the total psychiatric nurses was the graduates of nursing School.
9. Psychiatric nursing career of 75.5% of the total psychiatric nurses was less than 2 years.
10. 79% of the total psychiatric nurses completed inservice education & 18.4% of them completed special course for psychiatric nurse specialist.
11. 97.2% of the total attendants completed inservice education for attendant.
12. 79.8¡Æ0 of the total psychiatric nurses participated in nurse-pt. meeting or pt. ward personnel meeting.
13. Nurse therapist for group psychotherapy was 70.4% of the total psychiatric nurses.
14. Most frequent activity therapy performed by psychiatric nurses was recreational therapy, occupational therapy. & bibliotherapy.
15. Difficulties in performing acti-?ity therapy were lack of facilities (74.1%) & lack of time (14..8
16. 46.8% of the total psychiatric nurses¢¥ volunteered psychiatric -nursing was demanded by administraters. 17. The greatest dissatisfaction of the head nurses in psychiatric nuring were {stressful work 3 }
18. 55.6% of the total psychiatric nurses wanted 1 year of special course as desired educational` course for the psychiatric nurse specialist.
